Dear Colleagues,

The Armenian Association of Gastroenterology, together with the European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group (EHMSG) and the European Association of Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Nutrition, is organizing an international hybrid conference under the auspices of the United European Gastroenterology (UEG) “Ten years with the United European Gastroenterology (UEG). Armenia’s roadmap to European gastroenterology. It will take place on November 4-5, 2023 in Yerevan, in the meeting hall of Elite Plaza, and will also be broadcast online on the Zoom platform.

Armenian Association of Gastroenterology became a national member society of UEG in November 2013 and has since implemented successful collaborative projects with the focus on adapting guidelines; our young members have participated in various UEG activities including clinical fellowships.

Our mission is to integrate Armenian gastroenterology into European professional community and meet the high European standards of medical practice, research and education in the field of Gastroenterology in Armenia. Joining UEG has given our society the opportunity to achieve this.

This conference celebrates the 10th anniversary of UEG membership of Armenian Association of Gastroenterology by showcasing the successful collaborations, discussing further opportunities to advance and the challenges and obstacles arising along the way.

The conference is a unique opportunity to listen to the world-famous scientists of the field, who together with Armenian specialists will present the most current topics of gastroenterology.

We expect your active participation in this scientific conference, which is of great importance for the medicine of Armenia.

Francis Megraud

Dr Francis Mégraud is Emeritus Professor of Bacteriology at the University of Bordeaux since
September 2018. He obtained the diploma of Pharmacist and Doctor of Medicine at the
University of Bordeaux. He was Head of the Laboratory of Bacteriology at Pellegrin Hospital,
Bordeaux, France until 2017 and he is a Member of INSERM U1312. He was Head of INSERM
U853 from 2004 to 2015. He created the National Reference Center for Campylobacters &
Helicobacters in France in 1993, which he headed until 2017 and is one of
the founding members and current Secretary of the European Helicobacter & Microbiota
Study Group.
His interest for Campylobacters & Helicobacter pylori dates back to the early days after
the discovery of these bacteria. His main current interests are the role of H. pylori in gastric
cancer and antimicrobial resistance.

Manik Gemilyan

Manik Gemilyan, MD, MPH, PHD is Senior Lecturer at Department of Gastroenterology and
Hepatology at Yerevan State Medical University. Dr. Gemilyan received her MD degree from
Yerevan State Medical University and MPH degree from Emory University (Atlanta, GA, USA).
She is Secretary General of Armenian Association of Gastroenterology. Dr. Gemilyan was the
first UEG National Societies Forum member to represent Armenia. In 2016 she was elected a
member of UEG Meeting of Members (formerly General Assembly). She has publications in
peer-reviewed international journals as well as local journals. Dr. Gemilyan serves as
Consultant to the Ministry of Health of Armenia on Internal Medicine since September 2018.

Mirjana Rajilic-Stojanovic

Dr Mirjana Rajilić-Stojanović holds a cum laude PhD in the field of gut molecular ecology and is
an expert for gut microbiota diversity. She works as an Associate Professor at University of
Belgrade, at the Department for Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology. Dr Rajilić
Stojanović is a trans-disciplinary researcher, teacher and entrepreneur. The research topics
include development and application of molecular methods for studying gut microbiota;
identification of associations between microbiota diversity and (intestinal) diseases; microbial
taxonomy and systematics; development and evaluation of the interaction of functional foods
(probiotics and prebiotics including polyphenols) with microbiota and health; use of medicinal
herbs for development of functional foods, and biomaterials. Dr Rajilić-Stojanović has authored
57 scientific articles, five book chapters and two patents and has presented as an invited
speaker on over 50 conferences and meetings.

Sofya Grigoryan

Dr. Sofya Grigoryan is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Gastroenterology and
Hepatology at Yerevan State Medical University and physician at Mikayelyan University Hospital
Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She has significant experience teaching
foreign students. In addition, Dr. Grigoryan is the Secretary General of the Armenian
Association of Gastroenterology. Since 2021, she has been the representative of Armenia at the
Forum of National Societies UEG (United European Gastroenterology) and is an active member

Peter Malfertheiner

Peter Malfertheiner is Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of
Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Infectious Diseases at the Otto v. Guericke University of
Magdeburg in Germany, an appointment he has held since 1995.
He received his MD from the University of Bologna, Italy in 1975, and gained subsequent
medical experience at the Regional Hospital of Bozen, Italy, and the University Hospital of Ulm,
Germany (1978-1992), a Research Fellow at the Mayo Clinic GI Unit in Rochester, MN, USA.
Professor Malfertheiner has been Chairman of the UEGF (2004) and President of the UEGW
2006 and of the Education Committee of the United European Gastroenterology Federation
(UEGF). He is also the Editor of Digestive Diseases, Associate Editor of the American Journal of
Gastroenterology, and a member of the Editorial Boards of several other journals; the European
Journal of Gastroenterology, Helicobacter, Digestive Surgery, and the International Journal of

Prof. Theodore Rokkas, MD, PhD (U.K.), FACG, AGAF, FEBGH, received his Doctor of Medicine
