History
The Armenian Association of Gastroenterologists was established in 2012, bringing together gastroenterologists and doctors from various specialties interested in gastroenterology. The current president of the association is Manik Gemilyan, who serves as a consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology of the RA Ministry of Health. The association has approximately 70 members.
One of the primary objectives of the association is to support the advancement of Armenian medical science. This includes support for medical, educational, and scientific research in the field of gastroenterology, as well as the development and reform of clinical practices. The association also promotes the collaboration and implementation of joint programs by Armenian doctor-scientists. Additionally, it publishes information on medical news, technical advancements in medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals. The association has established a website and a scientific periodical for disseminating professional information and knowledge. It also organizes conferences, practical classes, lectures, seminar-discussions, meetings, and other events to foster knowledge sharing and collaboration.
Throughout its history, the association has organized numerous scientific conferences and seminars, both in Yerevan and in various regions of the Republic of Armenia and Artsakh. In 2014, the association became a member of the United European Gastroenterology (UEG). In 2016, Manik Gemilyan, a representative of the association, was elected as a member of the UEG governing body, the General Assembly, at the Forum of National Associations.
In 2017, the association collaborated with the European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group (EHMSG) on a grant program funded by UEG. This program focused on European guidelines for the management of Helicobacter pylori infection and fecal transplantation, adapted for Armenia. These adapted guidelines were presented at an international conference held in November 2018.
In 2020, inspired by the success of previous events, the association, in collaboration with the Association for Endoscopy and Nutrition (EAGEN), held an online conference on the topic of “Digestive diseases, nutritional, and microbiota modulation therapeutics role.” The event featured recognized international experts in the field as well as association members. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and a state of war, the conference was a significant success, with approximately 150 participants from Armenia and other countries
